Flaxseed

One of the most ancient domesticated seeds. Used by the Egyptian and Greeks for its incredible benefits; flaxseed has been consumed for more than 6,000 years. This is the reason why this noble seed is not just one of my favorites but it is also considered a super food. Flaxseed contains anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants called lignans that are known to help with hormonal balance.

Some benefits of flaxseed:

High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Flaxseeds contain the type of omega-3 called ALA, which acts somewhat differently in the body compared to EPA/DHA found in fish oil. ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid) is a fatty acid that studies had found helps to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and hypertension. It also improves platelet function, reduces inflammation, and promotes overall healthy endothelial cell function. Studies confirm that ALA is one of the heathy fats that should be included in a balanced diet.

Helps Lower Cholesterol

Studies have shown the benefits of flaxseed to lower cholesterol. A study by the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism found that adding flaxseeds into your diet can naturally reduce cholesterol. Flaxseed is also an excellent source of soluble fiber, and everyone knows of the beneficial effect that soluble fiber intake has on lowering total and LDL cholesterol levels.

Skin and Hair Health

ALA fats provide the essential fatty acids and vitamin B found to improve the overall health of your hair and skin by improving texture and reducing dryness. Some studies even suggest that it can help with dry eye syndrome thanks to its lubricant effects.

High in Fiber

Flaxseed contains high levels of mucilage gum content, a gel-forming fiber that is water-soluble and provides support to the gastrointestinal tract. This helps to increase nutrient absorption and makes you feel full.

Gluten-free option

Flaxseed is a great way to naturally replace gluten-containing grains in recipes. Flaxseed is generally easily metabolized and also anti-inflammatory. This makes it ideal for celiac and gluten-sensitive people that are restricted to gluten-free diets.
